Works-for-me-Wednesday: Three Gifts

This year, we heard a fantastic idea (from a family member, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, etc.) and decided we would copy it. The idea is this: everyone (which for us, includes me, my hubby and my 2 year old) would get 3 presents for Christmas, and that would be it. They would each have to fall under the following category: Something you want, something you need, and something to read. (We also do pajamas on Christmas Eve, but I didn't count that).

I think this idea works on many levels. If you have had a hard year (and who hasn't lately??), it's pretty easy to buy 3 gifts. They don't have to be expensive either. Or if you've had a good year and feel like you can afford more during this season, the 3 gifts can be things that are a little pricier. It's really up to you. I think it also helps to pull the focus away from presents, and more towards Christ, what the season is really about.

This is a tradition we hope to carry on for the rest of our lives. 3 gifts work for me! For more tips, check out We Are THAT Family!

I've heard of the three-gifts idea, but I like the way you categorize them. Every year I think that we're going to give only three gifts per person NEXT YEAR, but we haven't done it yet.

That is a great idea! That's something I would want to do with my (future) family! I love the categories!

This is a good idea. Unfortunately, I don't think it would work for my family. I use Christmas to get the kids a lot of things they need...like winter clothes. Then we get them a few learning items like books. We are limiting toys this year...only Santa is bringing 1 toy per child....and that's it for toys. I agree, Christmas shouldn't be ALL about the presents. You gotta do what works for your family. Great idea!

I have never heard about this, but I like the concept. I hate how Christmas has become so commercialized. Maybe a new family tradition is in order. Thanks for sharing. :-)

Growing up, we only got 3 gifts so it isn't a new concept for me. We have 2 boys (9 & 4) and this year I struggled with what to get the kids and where to draw the line. It wasn't easy and every time I mentioned the 3 gift idea to my husband, I never felt like he was "on board" with the idea because I didn't have any rhyme or reason to the plan. I love that you have put it in such simple categories, and they make sense. Every year I say I'm not going to procrastinate the shopping, and every year I do. This time I'd like it to be different and if I have a plan now, maybe I can pull it off! Thanks for sharing the idea! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas =)
