Works-For-Me-Wednesday: Blog Etiquette

I don't think I'm very blog savvy or anything, but I would like to think I know a thing or two about blog etiquette. Here are just a couple of things that irritate me or that are just plain annoying:

1. Leave comments - when you read a blog, leave a comment! It doesn't have to be long, but the person you are reading probably worked hard on the post and they deserve an eensy weensy comment from you. Even if you are disagreeing, leave it in a comment! (And by the way, don't leave a mean and nasty comment anonymously. If you're going to be rude, at least have the courage enough to let the person know who you are).

While I'm on comments, don't forget that a lot of people (including me) have special devices that let them know who was at your blog, and how many times they've come to your blog. So for all those people who think they can just come and read, take note, I know you were here and I know you didn't leave a comment. Don't be a blog stalker!! (But even if you are, I love you anyways.)

2. Give credit - don't take credit for someone else's hard work. If you tried a new recipe you loved and want to share, make sure you link back to the person you got it from. It's even a nice idea to leave a comment letting them know you tried your recipe and loved it and are sharing it on your blog!

Even for simple things, like ideas for a weekly item you do, you should give credit to. Example: I originally read about blog etiquette at Think Pink Cottage, and decided to use the same basic idea but come up with a little bit of my own as well.

3. Be regular - if you want people to read your blog, then post something! Don't leave the same post sitting there for months on end. People will probably stop checking! I also think we tend to overthink our posting. It doesn't have to be long (please, not too long) and sometimes it doesn't even need words, after all, isn't a picture worth a thousand of them?

4. Make it easy - make your posts easy for people to read: watch for run-on sentences, use paragraphs and please no dark background with light text (are you trying to give me a migraine?)

Blog etiquette works for me! If you would like more tips, please check out We Are THAT Family!

Hey Amanda -

I enjoyed your WFMW tip...in fact I love looking at your blog; mostly because I love you and I love your family. You are such an example to me to be dedicated in keeping a journal and I love that you are doing it through blogging. I have to admit (as I know you already know) I check your blog often and because I am still figuring out the tech savvy ways of blogging, I use your blog to link me to other friends's blogs. I am not the best at leaving comments - and should be better, thanks for the reminder...there is no excuse but time is a factor and because we don't have internet at home and I only have my lunch break to check things out, I do what I can. Another thing I am guilty of is not updating my blog - it always seems to be on my list of things to do - and I never seem to get to it. Anyway, here is your comment I can't promise I will comment more often, but I hope you know it is not because I don't care. I think of you and your family often and love seeing Peyton grow up. You are such a wonderful Mom and I am so excited for baby number 2! I hope all is well with you and I hope you will continue to be patient with me as I try to find the time and the patience to figure out this whole new bloggingw world!

Love ya,

Amanda

LOL, Yes, LEAVE COMMENTS!!! I too have one of those who visited things and I know and it ticks me off to know so many people visit but never leave a comment...but at least now I know people are reading it. Okay, I may be part of the non-blogger every now and then....but people are stealing your recipes and posting them on their blogs? That's LOOOOWWW!

LOL, that was a cute post. I'll have to check up on my etiquette to make sure I'm up to par :)

Good tips! People should pay attention and be courteous!

I have my own little blog stalker (it's an ex-boyfriend from many moons ago) who has no idea that I see every time he looks at my blog!

Your blog is very cute, by the way!

I agree with the leave a comment advice (and thus I am leaving a comment for you!). I always see my hit counter going up, but it's frustrating to see that 20 people visited and no one commented!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I'll have to try Redbox. I see it all the time at the grocery store.
Great blog tips.

ok Mrs. Amanda...you make a good point about comments, and I am one who loves to read blogs, but doesn't comment very much. You are definatly very good about updating your blog regularly, which is probably why so many people come to look at it. There is something new to read almost everyday! Very fun!

So I guess I have to leave a comment now, haha. I usually try when I have something to say because I know I love getting them. This was a good post!

Oh dear! I always read WFMW and Frugal Fridays but never comment. I truly enjoy reading the tips and tricks I find each week.

Great post! I think visitors often don't think they have anything important to say but really, we just love it when we see that 12 people found us mildly interesting that day! LOL! I really like your blog and especially your fonts! CAUTTE (in BlogSpeak of course!)

Yes...comments! Just one comment might make someone decide to keep up their blog, just knowing that someone is actually reading along. So often I feel like I'm talking to the wind, even though my blog stats show that I have lots of visitors.

hello! I am visiting from WFMW - just wanted you to know that 'I was here' heh, heh! Nice post - I just had one question....what's your take on responding to commenters on your post? I read an article about this the other day...take a peek if you like:

cheers!

I can't read those light test on dark backgrounds either. Funny, I was commenting all over the WFMW posts before I saw your contribution.

I'm really bad at responding to people that comment on my blog though although I love to hear from them. I think that is probably bad manners too.
